Leadership- A Key to Business Success
Leadership is Essential
In history students learn about the activities, good and bad, that individual historians label as a good leader and leadership. We study their personalities to extract the qualities required for leadership. Experts argue if leaders are made or born. I think it's some of both, based on situations and the individual. You can teach someone to lead but they must have the desire and certain personality or character traits to be effective and a high quality leader. Others are never taught leadership but in a situation that calls for leadership they emerge as a natural leader.
Leaders are sometimes defined as revolutionaries. During times of conflict or change one individual usually stands out. That person has the ability to motivate individuals to fight for something that is difficult. Martin Luther King Jr. is an example of a leader involved in a social cause. Wars require a leader. The absence of a leader in situations like these would be chaos.
In business, the roles of leader and manager are somewhat intertwined.
“Leader” usually implies a broad view, the person at the top, the visionary. The buck stops here usually means the leader is the one ultimately responsible for the success or failure of a given mission. Leaders utilize managers to help them complete their tasks. The “managers” are often not the “leader” but rather the implementer and at the same time they are expected to lead.
The current world situation calls for strong leadership. Recent changes in technology, economics, communication and social issues created problems that individuals and companies are struggling to deal with. It seems as if there's a whole new arena of leaders emerging. Bookstores offer numerous viewpoints by individuals promoting what they believe it takes to successfully lead a company. Some of these are excellent resources. Is there a magic formula? Can someone learn to lead by reading a book?
Many of the qualities of successful leaders from the past are still essential today.
Some things like integrity never change. Perhaps some individuals we looked up to as leaders forgot or disregarded qualities such as character. Society is fed up with immoral living, dishonesty and selfishness of today's business leaders. Emerging leaders need to restore the "good name" formerly associated with leadership, as well as embrace the changes in our current global society.
Experts have different opinions on what makes a good leader. Most people would agree there are certain characteristics that all good leaders must possess.
The following qualities I believe are essential for effective leaders. They are not necessarily in order of importance.
Passion. All strong leaders have passion.
They are totally committed to and sold on their cause. The end goal or result is the over driving force in their life. They eat breath and sleep this; sometimes to excess. Driven to succeed they also have the ability to ignite excitement in others. Without passion they could not enlist followers. Sometimes this is confused with enthusiasm or charisma. Having passion can lead to those behaviors but they are not requirements. Mother Teresa was not known for her enthusiasm.
Vision. Leaders have vision.
They look beyond today and see the big picture. Not content with how things are now they see something better in the future. A good leader is realistic about current circumstances but they don't feel trapped. Their desire to succeed or make things better drives them to find ways to make this happen.
Self Confidence. Leaders possess self confidence.
They've had past success, they know what they're capable of and most of all they understand the importance of never giving up. If they fail they continue trying until they succeed. Philosophers believe that thinking you can do something is half the battle. If you don't think you can do something you probably will not even try. A confident leader inspires their followers to believe in themselves. They do not have a problem delegating duties to others.
Integrity. A good leader is truthful and dependable.
Followers of leaders with integrity do not have to wonder if something their leader said is true – they know it is true. This is based on past behavior and reputation of the leader. Lies and deceitful behavior eventually surface. If this happens individuals are reluctant to follow someone they do not trust. Sometimes a leader doesn't reveal all they know and they might even dress something up due to sensitive issues but integrity is buried deep in their essence. They don't look for dishonest ways to do something or how to cheat the system. Jack Welch is a modern business leader known for his integrity.
Humble. Great leaders are humble.
They do not feel they are better than anyone else. They are willing to do everything they ask their followers to do. A leader recognizes the importance of teamwork and gives credit to others. It's not their success but the team's success. They don't boast or brag and sometimes even have difficulty taking credit. Sometimes humility is incorrectly defined as weakness. Jesus, washing the feet of his disciples and other acts he did, is a great example of humility.
Knowledge. A leader must posses the knowledge required to complete their mission.
Leaders are usually avid readers, life long students, and view every situation as an opportunity to learn more. Knowledge and education are not the same. Sometimes individuals with advanced learning possess little knowledge. Knowledge is like advanced common sense. Much of it comes from life experience. A leader's knowledge could be defined as wisdom. Wisdom is not only having knowledge but knowing how to use it in the most effective way. King Solomon, in the Bible, is sometimes referred to as the wisest man ever. His writings in the book of Proverbs are thought by some to be the best how to instruction manual ever written.
Think outside the box. Leaders know that things and life constantly change.
They know clinging to current methods and refusing to consider all possibilities prevents growth and eventually leads to stagnation. Individuals who think outside the box know their ideas are not always right therefore they seek input from others. Sometimes this leads to radical change. People resist change especially something drastic that affects them personally. Doing things like everyone else makes you "normal". Breaking away from the status quo makes you "different". Good leaders do not follow the crowd but rather search for the best way to complete their mission.
Accept Failure. Leaders know they do not always make the right decision but that most of the time they are right.
They admit their mistakes without making excuses. Mistakes for them are opportunities to learn. They don't give-up or wallow in self pity. By admitting mistakes a leader reveals their humility. Though we want our leaders to be like super heroes, we also want them to be human.
Effective communicator. A leader can have all the above qualities but if they can not communicate with their followers it's difficult for them to lead.
Communication isn't just talking. Leaders are good listeners. They pay attention to the details, remember the important things and have the ability to say the right thing at the right time. Communication from a good leader is positive. They give criticism if needed but don't destroy egos. Leaders know people react more favorably to praise. They praise more and criticize less. A leader does not reveal everything they know. They don't gossip or engage in communication that's harmful to someone else or to the mission. They limit their complaining to those who can do something about the problem. Conflict is not discouraged but rather controlled. A leader knows they will not be friends with everyone but they are friendly. The leader who practices the above principles will have the respect of their followers.
Courage. Leadership takes courage.
With courage, passion, vision, integrity and humbleness a great leader can climb mountains. Their businesses and the people that work with them excel and greatness is attained, not for the purpose of greatness but for the accomplishment of vision and mission. Their goal is clear and compelling and being such their teams work with them to achieve it. Great leadership remains unchanged decade to decade, century to century, and perhaps bad leadership remains unchanged as well. But it is with great leadership that we continue to thrive and build great companies, communities and ultimately the world. When leaders lead with quality, organizations thrive.

Learn To Set Boundaries And Start Saying No
Taking Time to Learn How to Set Boundaries is Good For YOU!!
We all need to put boundaries between ourselves and other people because we need a certain amount of space in order to think clearly and act properly.
If you don't put up boundaries, people will abuse you and your kindness. You might even be forced to do things that go against your will and your beliefs simply because you didn't have boundaries in place. When this happens, you'll lose your self-respect and your self-esteem will come crashing down.
Personal Boundaries are important
Boundaries are hugely important when building your self-discipline. It protects you and it helps dictate how you want to be treated. It keeps you real and honest with yourself.
It will help you exude confidence whenever you tell someone no. When you have boundaries, you only have to say no once because more often than not, the person doing the asking will believe you the first time you say it.
You may not believe it but rejecting people is part of life. No matter what we do, we can't escape getting rejected by other people and you also will do your fair share of rejecting others too.
If you've always acquiesced to doing tasks you don't particularly enjoy, but you're too afraid of rejecting the person doing the asking, then you need to start practicing. Otherwise, it can get to an unhealthy point where you continue doing things that are counterproductive to goals you've set for yourself.
If you'd like to achieve your dreams and your goals within a specific time frame, then you'd need to start saying no to requests and tasks that do not align with your values and your goals and instead waste your time.
Saying no the right way
If you're afraid of hurting someone's feelings, don't. Because you cant control peoples emotions. You can, however, make sure you deliver your rejection in a humane manner. You can try explaining why you're saying no to make them understand your situation.
Also, try using a gentle tone when you deliver the bad news especially if other people are within hearing distance. Rejecting and embarrassing people at the same time is a very rude thing to do so avoid delivering your rejection in such manner.
Setting boundaries and learning to say no are important milestones for your self-discipline. If you really find it hard to say no, just keep in mind that the more you say no to others, the more you say yes to your own success.

How To Stay Committed To Reaching Your Goals
Make the Commitment to your goals!!
Let's admit it, we all have that one goal we've been trying to set yet failed to achieve. Think about countless New Years resolution attempts, broken piggy banks, a planned vacation that remains a plan.
So how exactly do we go about having a goal and then actually achieve it?
The key to success is an overly used word, yet only followed by a few commitment. Yes, the word does not only apply to relationships. It also applies to everything else in life that one wishes to achieve. It could be with regard to your first million dollars, your weight-loss program, your love life, or simply beating your early-morning alarm.
Commitment is the key.
The only problem is that not everyone stays committed. The word itself is associated with fear, distraction, procrastination, and whatnots. You are in luck though, because below are a set of tricks you can carry up your sleeve should you plan to tackle your goals head-on.
Set a Clear and Definite Goal
Another clich, but this actually is a herculean task for most of us. You must set a realistic goal first, one that you think is worth your efforts if you intend to achieve a result.
Its not enough that you know what you want to achieve. You also should have a detailed plan before you make that first step. As soon as the path has been carved, it will only be a matter of time (and willpower) before you reach the destination.
Focus
We all fall victim to pitfalls and unexpected turns. In fact, a lot of people would stop after the first fall or wrong turn. When challenges come up and emotions cloud your judgment, you need to focus on what your real purpose is and go on with your journey.
Keep Moving
This is the reason why goals are planned ahead in detail, so you will not have to analyze (or overanalyze) when you are already midway through your journey. Sacrifices are expected and you will fall a few times. Just get up and keep moving until you reach your destination. Stopping in your tracks, giving up, and turning back are no longer options at this point.
Enjoy
Take it from Mary Poppins (she is one of my absolute favorites!!), Just a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down. Don't think of your goal as a task, but a game.
After all, its in the journey that we learn the most lessons - not the destination.

Rewarding Self-Discipline and Delayed Gratification
Setting up milestones for reaching your goals is important if you want to succeed. Equally important is setting up a reward system that allows you to enjoy and celebrate each milestone you've fulfilled.
But what kind of reward should you give yourself? Should you go out and buy the latest 1,000 iPhone? Or would you settle for self-praise and a pat on the back for a job well done?
The right reward for your hard work
Choosing the right reward is important if you don't want all your hard work to go to waste. If you've worked hard, and succeeded, in losing 10 pounds over 2 months, then you don't want to reward yourself by going to an all-you-can-eat restaurant.
In fact, your self-discipline will dictate you to stay away from places that will encourage you to eat more than what's good and healthy for you.
Instead, you can reward yourself by buying a slice of chocolate cake just to get that sugar craving out of the way or you can choose to buy exercise equipment that will help you lose even more weight.
Achieve more with delayed gratification
When you've achieved a certain milestone, you might want to consider adopting a delayed gratification system. Instead of immediately rewarding yourself, try extending your reward to the next milestone. This is called delayed gratification.
For example, if you're trying to lose weight and you've set every pound lost as a milestone, then you might want to consider making it 2 pounds instead. This means that when you've lost the first pound, you'll be pushing yourself to lose the second pound quickly so you can finally get your reward (and no, you still shouldn't reward yourself with an outing at your favorite buffet restaurant).
Delaying gratification is a great exercise to push yourself to do even more. Your self-control and self-discipline will come into play and allow you to focus on completing more tasks so you can finally reward yourself. You just need to egg yourself on, encourage yourself to put one foot in front of the other because your destination is right around the corner.
Lastly, its important to point that when practicing delayed gratification, you must have a punishment in place as well. So this means if you don't achieve the milestone you've set for yourself, then you don't get any reward. Its really that simple. However, if you're disciplined and committed, then you'll do everything in your power to achieve your milestones and get your reward.
What reward will you choose? Leave a comment below!!

The Essence Of Adopting a Morning Ritual Habit
Creating a Morning Ritual Can Change Your Life!!
If you hate waking up early, then you need to read this article (I can definitely fall into this category at times). According to research, creating good habits and sticking to a morning routine plays a huge role in your success. If you're a night owl, unfortunately, this means you will have to find ways to adapt and change your lifestyle.
Creating a morning routine and turning it into a habit may sound difficult at first. But if you keep at it every day for at least a month, you will start seeing noticeable differences in how you approach your entire day. A morning routine will help you feel more stable and you'll be so much more in control of your day.
Its peaceful in the morning
Early mornings don't have as much distraction as other times of the day. Your family and your neighbors will still be in bed (unless they've also adopted this habit), there'll be less noise on the streets, and your personal space will seem so much bigger.
With less distraction, you'll be able to think clearly and you'll have time to exercise, meditate, pray, update your journal, and plan your entire day.
A morning routine will help you feel more in control of your life and you wont feel as disorganized as before simply because you will have time to think your day through and organize your activities.
Simply put, your morning routine will set the tone for your day.
Get work done early
Mornings are best for getting your most difficult tasks done. Getting these tasks out of the way lets you enjoy relatively stress-free afternoons and you'll be much happier because you can get more things done in the day.
Your productivity levels will increase and you can even start working in advance on tasks that don't need to be done until later.
When you get things done earlier and faster in the day, you can reward yourself for a job well done. Just be careful when rewarding yourself though as some rewards may actually be detrimental to your goals.
For instance, if someone asks you to go partying on a weekday, you may want to tell them no. You may be tempted but think first if its going to somehow cause you to sleep in late and thus wake up late the following day. If this is the case, then simply decline.
No amount of partying can replace what you can accomplish by sticking to, and religiously following, your morning routine habit!

How to Organize Your Social Media Marketing for Success
Are you struggling to make an impact with your social media marketing?
Do you find yourself overwhelmed by the sheer number of platforms and strategies out there?
If so, you're not alone. In a world where everyone seems to be an expert, it's easy to feel lost and uncertain about how to proceed with your marketing efforts. However, there is hope. In our new course, Social Media Media Management, Alex Genadinik, a long-time social media marketer and business coach, shares valuable insights on how to organize your social media marketing for success.
Consistency is Key
One of the key takeaways from Alex's intro video is the importance of consistency in your social media marketing. Random acts of marketing, as he calls it, can hinder your progress and lead to underwhelming results. By implementing a social media marketing calendar, you can stay consistent, productive, and efficient. This approach removes the guesswork and helps you plan your content in advance, ensuring a cohesive and purposeful strategy. Moreover, by being consistent in your messaging and presence, you can build trust and familiarity with your audience, which are essential components of successful social media marketing.
The Power of Focus
In a world full of noise and competing advice, it's easy to succumb to the pressure of trying to do everything at once. Alex emphasizes the importance of focus and making conscious choices about which platforms align best with your business and goals. Rather than spreading yourself thin across numerous social media channels, he advocates for concentrating on a few platforms that are the most natural fit for your brand. This strategic approach not only simplifies your marketing efforts but also allows you to channel your resources and energy into making a meaningful impact on the platforms that matter most to your target audience.
Strategic Planning
Alex's course delves into the nitty-gritty of planning a 30-day calendar cycle for your social media content. From determining when to be funny, educational, or post memes to understanding the nuances of networking on social media, the course offers a comprehensive guide to strategically planning your content. By following this approach, you can ensure that each day brings a clear understanding of what needs to be done, fostering consistency and gradual improvement in your marketing efforts. The focus on strategic planning also allows for a deeper connection with your audience, as you can tailor your content to resonate with their interests and needs at different points in time.
Adaptation and Growth
As you become more adept at organizing and executing your social media marketing, the potential for automation and outsourcing becomes viable. Alex points out that effective marketing doesn't necessarily mean doing everything yourself. By learning the ropes and establishing a strong foundation, you can eventually streamline processes and delegate tasks, making your marketing efforts faster and more effective. This scalability not only frees up your time to focus on high-level strategy and engagement but also enables you to maintain a consistent presence on social media without being bogged down by the day-to-day operational aspects.
Invest in Your Success with Social Media Marketing
Ultimately, Alex's course serves as a beacon of hope for those who are struggling to find their footing in the vast landscape of social media marketing. Whether you're a first-time marketer or a business owner looking to revamp your marketing strategy, the course offers practical insights to level up your game. By investing in your business and committing to organizing your social media marketing, you set yourself on the path to success in the digital realm. The ability to understand and implement effective social media marketing strategies is increasingly becoming a competitive advantage in the business world, and taking proactive steps to enhance your skills and approach can yield tangible results in terms of brand visibility, audience engagement, and ultimately, business growth.
The journey to mastering social media marketing begins with organization and strategic planning. By embracing consistency, focus, and strategic thinking, you can navigate the complexities of social media with confidence and purpose. If you're ready to elevate your marketing efforts and unlock your potential, consider enrolling in Alex's course to take the first step towards a successful social media strategy. It's time to invest in your business and pave the way for a brighter future in the digital landscape.
Remember, success in social media marketing is not about doing everything – it's about doing the right things, and doing them well. From establishing a strong foundation to refining your approach over time, the journey to success in social media marketing is one that requires dedication, strategic thinking, and a willingness to adapt to the ever-evolving digital landscape. With the right guidance and commitment, you can position yourself for success and make a meaningful impact with your social media marketing efforts.

Embracing Personal Development and Authentic Leadership
on the Visionary Womenpreneur's Podcast
In recent episodes of the Visionary Womenpreneur's Podcast, two remarkable discussions unfolded that interlace the themes of personal development and transformative leadership. These conversations shed light on the journey towards self-discovery, and how this path can significantly influence one’s leadership style and business success.
Nicole Wittauer: Questioning Identities and Pursuing Multiple Passions
In Nicole Wittauer's interview, listeners were captivated by the concept of exploring the numerous identities we adopt throughout our lives and the pivotal first step of becoming aware of these identities. Whether these are stemmed from societal norms, parental guidance, or other extraneous factors, Nicole prompts us to question if these really mirror who we are, or if they are simply inherited to assimilate or circumvent conflict.
This discussion is not only about rejecting these ingrained identities but about how they have sculpted us and discovering ways to transform them. The process, as Nicole highlights, involves no resentment but gratitude for the lessons learned, which is crucial for personal growth. The focus shifts from a single life trajectory to embracing a multiplicity of passions and interests, fostering uniqueness and synergy instead of division.
Leading with Ease: Establishing Values-Based Culture with Lisa Wilson
Contrasting Nicole’s perspective, the 'Leading with Ease' episode delves into the realm of leadership, specifically within toxic work environments. Lisa Wilson reflects on her experience at such a company and how it honed her business acumen and empathy. She discusses the significance of culture and the leader's role as its guardian, shedding light on the necessity of rules and timely conflict resolution that align with the company's values.
The episode emphasizes the importance of missions in guiding companies and individuals. Lisa shares valuable insights on updating purpose statements and ensuring that one's professional vision aligns with their personal values. The 'Leading with Ease' course, with lessons rooted in knowing oneself, having a destination (mission, vision, values), fostering relationships, and impactful leadership, resonates deeply on this front.
Convergence of Paths: Personal and Professional Growth
Both episodes converge at the intersection of personal development and leadership. As Nicole’s philosophy of exploring different facets of oneself meets the leader's responsibility to cultivate a values-based culture, we see how a deep understanding of oneself can powerfully influence leadership effectiveness.
The ability to foster a supportive environment begins with the leader’s personal journey of questioning, playing, and exploring without fear of failure or external judgment, as Nicole suggests. Similarly, Lisa Wilson, in the 'Leading with Ease' segment proposes that ensuring cultural alignment within a team requires a leader who's transparent about their mission and upholds the values they preach.
Ultimately, these episodes of the Visionary Womenpreneur’s Podcast offer a treasure trove for those seeking to refine their leadership while navigating their own paths of self-discovery. The message is lucid: personal growth is inextricably linked to professional success, and embracing authenticity in leadership is not just commendable, but also a strategic advantage in the dynamic world of business.

Working From Home: 4 Pitfalls
Pitfalls To Watch Out For When Working From Home
There's no denying that working from home offers many advantages, but it is a change for many right now. And it can be challenging.
Working from home can be the ultimate freedom you get to set your own hours, working when, where and how you want. But in this time, it might be more structured with work times. team meetings etc.
However, there are also a number of potential pitfalls you need to be aware of, and watch out for, or you'll risk turning your home-based job into an unproductive nightmare.
1. Failing to keep business and private life separate
This is one of the most common issues for people who work from home, especially those who are self-employed. I'm writing this on Saturday!! Proves my point.....
When the home office is right there, it can be hard to stay away even if you should really be off work for the day. Before you know it, you'll have spent another few hours of your precious weekend on work. This is the fast track to burning out, and something you must learn to avoid if you want to be successful working from home.
2. Not planning your work
This mostly applies to people who are self-employed and may not have a boss telling them what to do every day. When you're working on your own projects, planning is an absolute must. If the first thing you ask yourself when you start your day is: Okay, what am I going to do today?, then you're setting yourself up for failure.
It's much better to plan out the next day before you go off work in the evening, so you're ready to get started first thing in the morning.
3. Working from home, at irregular times
When you're free to set your own hours, it doesn't mean that you should only work whenever you feel like it. Chances are after a few months that you'll rarely feel like it at all, especially when there are so many fun distractions around the house.
That's why it's better to try to stick to working the same hours every day, even if it might resemble a real job a bit too much for your liking. You can always take breaks during the day if you need to recharge, but try to at least go into your office around the same time if you want productivity levels to stay high.
4. Not getting out of the house regularly
When you work from home there is usually very little motivation to go outside. You've got everything you need at home anyway, right? That's true, but after a whole week you'll most likely be feeling isolated and lonely, and that's perfectly normal.
That's why it's so important to make time for little things like grabbing lunch with a friend - something as simple as that can really boost your energy and make your working week easier and less lonely. Especially now, so take a walk everyday. Take a bike ride.

Self Publishing Still Worth It
Self publishing -- at first was a BIG question. But it remains a truly powerful way to get your book to the market and to succeed as an author.
There are a lot of myths out there about publishing, but I'm here to tell you that self publishing, especially digital self-publishing is better than traditional publishing. Mainly due to the upheaval in the publishing world with digital formats, and the ease at which a person who wants to self-publish can get involved today, usually for free.
Digital Self-publishing is Better Than Traditional Publishing
Proliferation of Tablets On The Rise -- Over 1/3 of all adults will own tablets by 2016, according to Forrester Research. That's a 400 percent increase in adoption per year! Anyone who is not excited by these numbers needs a lobotomy. You can cash in on this trend with digital self publishing.
Increased Digital Subscriptions -- People who have never even subscribed to a print magazine have subscribed to magazines via their eReaders or tablets. People really love reading on their tablets more than reading print, or on their PCs. People are also more likely to continue a digital subscription than a paper one. Some speculate that the privacy afforded a person reading a tablet over a book or magazine accounts for these facts.
eBook Sales Keep Going Up -- Amazon and Barnes & Noble announced in 2011 that digital books were outselling print books 2 to 1 for Amazon and 3 to 1 for Nook. This trend will continue as more people grasp and then obtain the technology. The instant gratification of eBooks will drive the trend even more. People will order an eBook without giving it as much thought as they do buying in a bookstore.
Digital Publishing Takes Many Players Out of the Game:
No Middle Man To Worry About -- By self-publishing straight to Digital you do away with the middle men, the printers, not to mention the long process involved with choosing a printer, is all gone. It's easy to put your book in digital format whether for Kindle, Apple, or Nook. In fact you can even bypass all that and put it into PDF format and sell directly from your own website. No need for printer, paper manufacturer, book store, book delivery etc....its even more environmentally friendly.
With New Paper Back Publishing You Can Have the Best of ALL Worlds
80/20 Rule At Work -- Digital self-publishing is proving the 80/20 rule. If you don't know what that is, basically it's a theory that states that 20 percent of the work gives you 80 percent of the results. If you can get 80 percent of the sales you would have made if you also put your book in print, with only 20 percent of the work, or cost, you're well ahead of the game. For just a little bit of money (say $35.00) you can easily get your book in print. BUT, there is real money in digital publishing when YOU work at it. It does take WORK! And the work is YOURS.
Selling Books in Multiple Markets Can Help Sales
True Book Sales Numbers Aren't That High -- On average, most books published sell less than 1000 books, total. That's probably a distressing figure, but knowing that and understanding why (marketing) can help you do better than a traditional publisher. Also knowing this number can help you determine how much money you want to spend getting published.
One BIG Myth of Traditional Publishing is that the Publisher Does ALL of the Marketing!
You Must Promote Anyway -- Whether you use traditional publishing or not, you are largely responsible for promoting your book yourself. Only about 2 percent of authors make the best sellers list whether they use traditional publishing or self-publishing. Why not keep the profit yourself? The key to sales is marketing!
You can be successful self publishing your information products, and even your novel if you realize the truth of the industry and what constitutes success, and how to get there. (Marketing!)

Distractions That Drain Your Focus
4 Distractions That Drain Your Focus on Your Goals
There are plenty of distractions in the modern world. They take away your focus and your energy and can stop you from having the life you want. If you're not hitting your goals, maybe its time to look at your main distractions and do something about them.
Here are the most common distractions that are likely stopping you from living your best life.
1. Social media
It wont surprise you to hear that the biggest distraction for most people is social media and the hours it eats out of the day. Take a quick look at your Instagram feed or Facebook, and before you know it, you're mindlessly scrolling through what looks like other peoples perfect lives.
Its time to take stock and decide how much of your life you want to spend watching what other people are doing. Set some boundaries about when and how long you will spend on social media. Take a look at your friends and see if they're people you want to know.
2. Smartphone
Smartphones are great tools, but they can quickly become a huge distraction. Look around and see how many people are walking down the street with their eyes glued to their phones. Think about how long you can go without checking your phone. Try leaving your phone in your purse or your pocket when you go out for a meal. Leave it at home when you take the dog for a walk.
Another tip is to cull some of the apps on your phone. Work out what you need and delete the rest. And remember mobile games are one of the biggest time-sucks. Think about how you want to use your time and be strategic about how you use your phone.
3. Online watching
How much time do you waste watching meaningless YouTube videos or binge-watching box sets? These might feel like simple, relaxing things to do, but if youre not careful, they can drain as much time as social media.
Keep focused on how you want your life to be and make decisions about how much recreational TV you want to watch.
4. Negative people
Giving your time away to negative people can be damaging to your success. You can probably name the people at the office or in your life who drain you of energy and who take up a lot of time with their complaining, attention-seeking, and neediness.
If there are people around you who are undermining your chances of meeting your goals, you need to set some healthy boundaries and get out of their orbit. Look for positive, high energy people who will support you and cheer you on.

A Bully in the Manager’s Office
Bullies Live In The Manager's Office Too
Bullies don’t just exist on the playground. They also sit in the manager’s chair or the CEO’s office. Bully leadership is sharp, authoritative, angry, and feels uncomfortable to those in contact with it. Bully leaders believe that they are rallying the troops, getting everyone on board. But that is not what happens. The bully leader barks out orders, threatens consequences and uses strong, harsh statements to “motivate” people to do what the leader wants.
The “motivation” that results is limited. And that is what the "Bully Leader" doesn't realize. Bully Leaders are scary for people so they do what they need to do but there is a sacrifice. The sacrifice occurs in the work performed. People do what needs to be done and that is all. They don't go above and beyond. They don't share their knowledge and ideas with the leader. The Bully Leader wants and needs to be the one with the great ideas. They don't want to share the limelight.
The bully leader believes their approach is working because they see results. They don’t see the limitation or the impact of their style. What they see are results. The results are what needed to occur. The Bully Leadership style is reinforced and continues on. What they fail to see is the results that could have happened with a more open, empowering leadership style. They fail to see the impact of their leadership on their staff. They fail to recognize the negative effects. These negative impacts are costly to the company. As a result:
People are not empowered.
Bully leaders miss out on the great ideas of their staff.
- People respond with decreased motivation, interest and commitment or loyalty. This can lead to decreased productivity and quality.
- People may have physical responses that increase absenteeism.
- People may have their emotional responses that mirror the leaders creating a bullying atmosphere that permeates the organization.
What motivates the Bully Leader?
Bully Leaders want control. They lack trust in other people. They believe that no one will or can do the job as well as them. Out of their fear and lack of trust comes their assertion of aggressive behaviors. They also have a history of using bullying techniques to control their world. It has a history of working for them, feeling empowering to them and maintaining their own safety.
The results of the bully leader are far less than that of an empowering coaching leader. This effective leader trusts that people can and will do their job. Through their empowerment, staffs exceed expectations. The leader has time to create new business opportunities, nurture existing client relationships and pursue greater results.
A bully leader can shift and become a empowering coaching leader through intentional focus and work. There are several steps they need to take to make this shift:
- Recognize that their bullying approach is not effective
- Commit to the change
- Work with a coach to learn: coaching skills, creating a coaching work environment and empowerment strategies
- Work with the team to transition from being bullied to being coached. This step is the hardest because it requires trust on both sides and trust has not existed for this team in the past. The leader will have to build trust and be patient during this transitional time. Their commitment to change will have to extraordinary to demonstrate their trust of others and their willingness to risk their own vulnerability.
- Recognize accomplishments of the team and each success.
Bullying behavior can be shifted to that of a collaborative leader with focused work on the part of the leaders. Organizations continue to recognize the negative impact a bully has their overall outcomes and work to shift the leader’s behavior or move bullies out of the organization. Take action today to shift your organization to one of empowerment and collaboration and see the results within the company change. The benefits are astounding. You will see increases in employee performance, loyalty, idea generation and sharing, team work, focus, and implementation of strategic goals. These all contribute to improved overall success of the organization.
