Corporations can not survive without teams: there's too much work to do. As a company grows it divides into teams, based on common factors. Instead of having one or several people do everything the individual employees become specialists in one aspect of the business. Companies believe this saves money and is the best way to utilize the abilities of their employees.


Dividing personnel and putting them in a certain spot on the organizational chart does not produce unity. It takes time and work to build an efficient and effective team. Unfortunately, many teams become dysfunctional. A dysfunctional team can slow productivity, service delivery and the overall operational effectiveness of the company.


Teams do not have to be dysfunctional.


The leader or manager, more than anything else, determines the success or failure of a team. If the leader’s agenda and delivery is all about the leader rather than the individual team members or the team, it feels like a dictatorship.  This type of leader often does not want input.  Employees are not confident sharing their true opinions or ideas in this type environment. Rather their responses become routine intending to please the leader. When the leader fails to do effective team building, employees do not grow, good ideas are repressed and this attitude affects all areas of their jobs and the company.


A leader not willing to listen could have their own confidence challenges as well as control problems.

Many times the most qualified person for the job does not have the management and leadership skills that they need to transition to their role as leader. Leadership skills can be learned and developed.  This can be accomplished through training with ongoing coaching. Unfortunately, employees are stuck with the unqualified manager while they either become more qualified as a leader or continue to operate as they have - a tough situation to be in and the company suffers.


Managing conflict in the workplace can highlight the challenges a leader can face. People fear conflict for numerous reasons. Some avoid it at all costs. This type of person is careful to make sure none of their words are interpreted as controversial.  Others abandon the discussion as it starts to pick up steam. A good leader knows how to navigate conflict. Discussing different ideas and ways of doing things often leads to a better way. A good leader is comfortable facilitating diverse opinions, does not let anyone get out of order, draws out quiet employees, does not allow one person to monopolize the situation and considers all suggestions.


Leaders are expected to evaluate the performance of team members, hold them accountable, apply discipline if needed, and foster a positive team environment. A leader, who lacks self control and does not want others to hold them accountable, finds it difficult to manage people. Team members have jobs to do, goals to reach, and expectations to meet. They grow when their manager communicates with them openly and honestly about their responsibilities. In many companies though it seems leadership styles range from one extreme to the other – they either overlook everyone's behavior or they control everything everyone does.


What can a leader do to foster healthy growth on their team? Being human and showing their vulnerability is perhaps the most important tools for good leaders. It demonstrates their authenticity, and builds trust. Many times employees feel inferior to their leaders. Therefore, they are never truly comfortable around their managers and are reluctant to speak up. A good leader admits when they are wrong as well as shares incidents to show they are imperfect humans. They make everyone feel as important as everyone else. It is difficult to build teams if employees feel favoritism exists.


Good Leaders Aren't Scared of Team Building


A good leader encourages communication and feedback from their employees. When someone shares an idea they do not belittle that person, and they do not let other team members attack each other. By giving each person and each idea value, the employees feel valued. When suggestions lead to positive changes, a good leader gives credit to the person with the idea as well as the team. This builds self confidence and a strong team. Employees continue contributing. In some situations a healthy team is more productive than individuals. The team combines the strength and knowledge of all members.


A good leader keeps the team focused. In the work place, especially during meetings, it is easy to get distracted. The employees look to the manager as their example.  If the manager has a negative attitude or spends too much time on personal phone calls, the employees feel this is OK.


A good leader controls the work environment without being controlling. It's a common belief that actors have strong egos. Leaders lose their egos. They do not focus on their needs but rather what's best for the team. A good leader knows without the help of their team they will not be successful. Therefore, one of their main advantages is to build a strong team.

Try these things:


Build Better Boundaries

There are times when you can deal with an interruption, and times when you just need to work. Look for ways to create better boundaries to keep your productivity high, and your frustration low. If you have the ability to shut your door when you need to concentrate, do so. if not, talk to your coworkers about how to signal them when you are in interruption-free mode.


Clean Up Your Act

Sometimes the simplest thing self-care action at work is to create a better workspace for yourself is to clean up the clutter. By being able to find what you need, when you need it, you preserve your sanity and get more done.


Escape to Eat

Your workspace should never be a dining hall. When your lunch break comes around, it's time for you to go. The problem with eating at your desk, is you become tempted to keep working while you eat. The best self-care practice at lunchtime is to step out and eat elsewhere. Even if you work from home, the very act of eating away from your workspace can do wonders for your mental health. Go to another room or even just pick a different chair at the kitchen table as a way of telling your brain you're done working for the time being.


Put Away the Screens

While it's not always practical to put away your laptop or tablet, it's good to do so when you can. Why? After a few hours, staring at any screen, whether it's on your phone or elsewhere, can make your eyes hurt. This constant exposure to electronics can be very wearying and even cause damage to your body over time. Don't believe it? Consider how many people you know, yourself included, who have had problems with carpel tunnel in the past year or two. The solution? Make a point of doing some things by hand. To do lists don't need to be on an app or computer screen to be effective. Also, clustering jobs which aren't tech heavy can give you a nice break during the day.


The key to self-care at work is in making your workspace work for you, not against you. By paying attention to these simple details, you'll feel more productive and enjoy your work day more.

Manager Demands Negatively Impact Employee Performance


A small company had a staff team that was dedicated to their work, but challenged by their manager/business owner.   His expectations were high but his ability to communicate effectively about expectations low.  Instead of clearly communicating what tasks needed to be completed in advance he would outline tasks at the last minute without enough time left to complete the job in a quality way.  The staff felt that they had to get the job done, that there wasn’t any option.  They bent over backwards, worked extra hours, came in on days off to complete the work.  And, despite new tasks being thrown in along the way they completed the work.  And as quickly as it was done the next unreasonable task was on the table.  There was no acknowledgement that they had gotten an impossible job done, just the high expectation for the next.



What happens to your workforce when you fail to acknowledge or thank them? 


Work forces decrease performance.  Research on worker performance has consistently indicated year after year that money is not the number one motivator for staff, but rather social praise, success, acknowledgement rate higher.   When business owners and leaders demand, demand, demand and never acknowledge that the staff met deadlines went above and beyond is demoralizing to staff.  Staff become frustrated that no matter how hard they work it is never acknowledged.   Frustration leads to anger and they wonder why they continue to work so hard.


 Simple steps can be taken by managers and owners:


- Set reasonable goals
- Agree with staff what is doable
- Empower staff
- Acknowledge staff through thank you’s and recognition

Using these simple steps managers can improve the workplace environment and overall work performance.  Having a positive, engaged workforce improves the bottom line.


Using an effective employee performance improvement system is another strategy for developing a fully engaged workforce.  Staffs that meet with their manager in a positive improvement system are responsive to manager coaching and feedback.  When coming out of an environment that has not been positive or acknowledging managers will need to build trust and rapport.

How to Repurpose Content Without Being Repetitive



Repurposing is a bit like magic: you take a single blog post, short video, or infographic and transform it into multiple pieces of valuable content. But before you start conjuring new videos, audio, or visuals across numerous platforms, remember: there's a big difference between strategic repurposing and simply regurgitating content. If you give your audience the same thing over and over, they might disappear.



For sustained engagement, each repurposed piece must feel familiar, yet completely fresh.



1. Personalize the Content to the Medium

When people think of repurposing, many believe that its simply a matter of taking content from one medium (for example, written) and turning it into another (for example, audio, video, visual, or interactive). That's a great first step, but you can't stop there.



For example, if you start with a blog post and use it word for word in a video script, your audience is going to know somethings up. They might not recognize the exact wording, but reading a blog post out loud on video is going to sound stilted and unnatural.



You must personalize the content to the medium.



For example, lets say you're converting a tutorial blog post into a video. Instead of simply narrating the steps using the blog content as your script, incorporate a live demonstration, add some new observations, and walk viewers through the process.



2. Each Platform Has a Unique Personality

The same rule applies to platforms. If you're transforming an original piece of content into multiple social media posts on different platforms, you'll need to personalize each post. A complete rewrite or redesign is unnecessary, but keep in mind the individual platforms maximum word count, audience, and popular format.



For example, the tweet you post on X (formerly Twitter) wont look like your post on Facebook. Or, you might post a short video on TikTok and a carousel on Instagram.



3. Micro-Focus

Find a single interesting point or statistic within your original content and expand on it in different formats. It can be easier to narrow in on one sub-topic and create variations of it instead of trying to make an entire blog post appear fresh and new in different formats.



- Did a specific point generate audience interest?

- Was there an idea that you feel you could have explored further but you didn't have the space to do so?

- Is there a sub-topic that could generate fun and interesting graphics or sound clips?

- Narrow your focus to that one subject by either creating a case study, a short video showing its real-life application, or an infographic that provides more detail.

This allows you to dive deeper into subjects and offer new value without simply duplicating the entire original piece. This micro-focus gives your audience the impression that they're learning something entirely new.



3. Build on Reader Reactions

Your audiences comments and questions can inspire a wealth of repurposed content. Their unique perspectives on a topic can motivate you to reframe your content, create a response, or offer a fresh angle.



For example, if a post on productivity tips generated questions about goal-setting or removing distractions, you might create infographics, social media posts, or explainer videos that provide more information on these topics.



Or, if a commenter said something about the subject matter that you disagree with, you can create content that serves as a counter-argument (without calling out the commenter by name, of course) and demonstrates your expertise.
