Working Towards A Socially Responsible Business



Being a Socially Responsible Business



Being socially responsible as a business has always been a goal and an important one.  But this year, I have taken it on even more consciously.  We are striving in a more dedicated way towards that goal. I interpret social responsibility as two fold -- one is how we treat people  -- pay fair wages, fair exchange for services, work with other socially responsible companies and secondly -- is an environmental focus -- how we operate and how that impacts the earth. We are taking actions in both of these areas and like most values and goals -- we are striving but aren't perfect (yet)!



Socially responsible businessSome of things that we are doing:



Building a list of resources here on the website for you
Working towards Green Business Certification with Green America
Reducing paper usage (I love printing reports out so this is BIG)
Contributing to organizations that support women in business
Talking about social responsibility
Moving our bank accounts to a Credit Union that invests in the local community and education and does NOT support investments in guns, big oil or other companies that are not within our guidelines.



What actions can you take that would improve your organizations operations and feel good for you and your team?



Being socially responsible can feel really good.  When you increase your giving and outreach into the community it feels good.



There are many ways to achieve this.

-->>Create a volunteer day for your staff to help out in the community.
-->>Take on interns within your organization
-->>Give to organizations locally -- food banks, homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters... whatever organization is a good fit for you and your company.
-->>Let your team know that you are giving and supporting the community.



You can also write a press release about your giving, but that shouldn't be the WHY of the giving, just a side affect.



Involve your team in making giving decisions.



You could have team members submit ideas for organizations to support and pick one organization each month or each quarter that you support.  Have them share WHY that organization is important to them.  Include their WHY in your company newsletter.



Participate as a company in events -- create a running team or cycling team or other team that can participate in events that raise money for a charity.  Now you are achieving multiple things at the same time.  You are accomplishing some fundraising and charity work, you are getting your team working together, and they are doing something that is healthy!  It is a true win-win-win strategy.



However you decide to increase your company's social responsibility - start today with one action and grow from there.



There are so many ways to improve. Here are a few more ideas.





1. Recycling
2. Eliminating Styrofoam
3. Adding solar power
4. Reducing your carbon footprint
5. Buying only recycled paper and paper products
6. Using earth friendly cleaning products



Of course, there are many, many ways to improve your operations and make them more earth friendly, sustainable and socially responsible.

Business Networking for Business Growth



Networking as a business building strategy



Networking is a great business development strategy when done right! But many business owners fail to have a complete strategy for networking!  There are several keys that make networking work better!



Networking Key #1:



Messaging.  Have a compelling message and call to action when you do your 30 second or 60 second intro.  Many business owners say their name, their company and what they do, but they don't say how they solve the prospects pain.  You need to get to the pain and leave some intrigue so that people will want to talk with you.  Your goal is to enter into a conversation!  When you have a compelling message -- then people will walk up to you and say I need to talk with you!!  That is what you want. Networking Key #2: Your Business Card



The second key is to have a business card that is a lead generation tool.  When you buy business cards you are buyiing your very own piece of advertising real estate.  BUT, many do not fully utilize that real estate.  Include a call to action on the back of the business card that people will want.  This is where you can add your special offer.  The offer should be an informational report that they can download from your website... which brings us to Key #3; but be sure to watch my short video trainings series that outlines how to create a powerful business card.



Networking Key #3: Landing Page With Offer



The business card is leading people to your website or landing page with a compelling offer on it.  A special report or informational report that the individual can download.  This gets the person on your mailing list and you now have the opportunity to continue to market to them. I have a template for the report on my site as well as the landing page.  A landing page is a 3 page website.  The page with the offer, the opt-in confirmation page and the thank you page.  The only thing that a person can do is to opt-in or leave.  Most websites are big branding sites that fail to have an offer on them or a way for people to be in touch other than a number and contact us form.  Neither of these work effectively.  When you add a compelling offer to the site, then you increase your leads and can work on converting leads to clients.



Networking Strategy Key #4



After the opt-in, you need an email marketing series that goes out to people automatically. This is called an auto-responder. There are many great programs for auto-responders   - Aweber, Get Response, Zoho Campaigns etc.  Email follow up is the first step in your follow-up strategy.  But you need a follow up plan along with scripts for you and your staff.

Magic of Mistakes



Humans will always make mistakes.





The keys to overcoming your mistakes are to:



- Learn from the mistakes.

- Know what you did incorrectly.

- Accept that you made a mistake.

- Use the mistake to better yourself and your business.

Not until you are willing to embrace those things, will you be ready to find out the hidden treasures that can be found when mistakes are made.



As a business owner, you know all about mistakes. You made little ones as you got started. For some, too many mistakes and they find that the business life is not for them. And, maybe it isn't.



Being in business for yourself requires a thick skin. You will have customers that are impossible to please, competition that seems to outdo you at every turn and unsuccessful marketing strategies. But, you live and learn. You will only be able to continue building your business if you have the right attitude - a positive one.



Turn your mistakes into big money.



It is human nature not to want to feel isolated. That extends to the business world. A business owner, who is brave enough to point out the mistakes they have made and how they learned from them, will have a following among other entrepreneurs. You can take that on the message and share it in the world, via speaking, social media, webinars, trainings etc. and gain a wide audience.



Networking is a part of doing business.



Your connections can be helpful when sales are slow or when you are looking to put together a new business venture. Targeting budding businesses with your brand of sage advice is one way to turn a negative into a positive.



What about customers? Maybe you hired someone who wasn't the best at customer service. Every business owner knows that poor customer service can break a business. Instead of sitting back and brooding about your misfortune, take action.



Use this opportunity to revamp your customer service policy. That employee may be better in another area of your business. This may be the time to automate your customer service with autoresponder messages, a FAQ section on your website or an improved outsourced response service.



Challenges force you to take a look at your business. Is there a way to improve an existing process? Of course there is. Use a mistake such as sending the wrong product or a failed online checkout process to make changes that will increase sales in the future.



What sets you apart?



You are willing to learn from mistakes (by using suggestions like those above) to continue to move forward in your business pursuits instead of leaning on them like crutches. Excuses rarely accomplish anything good. Mistakes can sour your mood. Shake it off and find out what you can learn from them to make your business a success.

You CAN Do This!

Entrepreneurship is Challenging But You Can Do This!



Don't give up! It takes persistence, commitment, and learning to succeed as an entrepreneur.





Being an entrepreneur isn't easy but it is doable.  You can succeed! Don't give up!



If you are considering throwing in the towel be sure that you have given it your all.  Learning is the number one task as an entrepreneur.  Being a constant learner is critical. CEO's or business owners that invest in their own learning and personal development are more likely to make it than an entrepreneur or CEO that thinks they know it all.



The world is ever changing and as an entrepreneur you need to be willing to change with it.



Learning new strategies or approaches can change your results.



If you were a traditional marketer then you are challenged to shift to a marketer that embraces the Internet and social media.  Both are viable sources of new business for all entrepreneurs whether you are online or offline.



Creating print ads that do not have a strong call to action that bring people to your website can be a mistake and leave money or new clients behind.



Before you throw in the towel be sure that you have checked yourself and made sure that you have done everything that you can to learn the new systems that are available for growing your business

When I started my business I was baffled by all of the things I had to know as a business owner! But once, I figured them out, and how to make it work -- it all got easier.

It starts with leadership -- YOUR leadership!! Leaders create the vision and strategy for their business. It starts right there.



The second pillar of success is Marketing -- Communications. When you have a compelling marketing message and a strategic marketing plan -- then you are building your growth system.



The third pillar is Operations. You have to create an operational plan that fits with your business and your life. Businesses can be monsters that take over your life. An operational plan -- continues to build your systems for success!! Business systems make your life easier, and increase your profits.



The fourth pillar is YOUR products or services. They are of course a key to your success, just not the only key!! We look at how they are packaged, upsells, down-sells, ways to increase revenue.



We focus on these four pillars and key growth strategies.

A successful business is built with the FOUR PILLARS of SUCCESS and the foundation of these pillars is YOU, your mindset, your self care and balance.



But let me be clear -- if you do not focus your CEO energy on growth you will fail to GROW your business!!

The last 2 posts covered the first four of the killer mistakes you can make that will not only make you lose your fish, but possibly your entire company.



Today we’re going to talk about the fifth killer mistake:

5. Up Cash Creek Without a Paddle.



Even when business is good there’s still a change of running out of cash flow. You have to always be prepared for a slow in sales or a surge in expenses. One of the keys to balancing your cash flow is to get your clients to pay on time. This can seem like a nightmare, but is absolutely essential to a successful business.



Here are some tips to speed up the payment process:



- Automate payments whenever possible, using online payment systems can be a big help!

- Always send invoices on time and adjust your records for potential audits.

- Learn how the client processes payments on their side and find out precisely where to send invoices.

- Find out who’s in charge of processing orders and payment, so you know who to contact if needed.

- Have a follow-up procedure in place, just in case.

- As a last resort, call your contact to ask questions.

- Always make sure your invoices are correct before sending them out.

You also need to make sure your cash flow is protected. You can do this by:



- Always know which accounts need paid and when.

- Negotiate with your suppliers for the lowest cost possible.

- Have a bank contingency plan in place.

- Build your own inventor network.

These are all great ways to protect the cash flow of your business and prepare for fish transitions and slow sales. These last few lessons are all about finding and catching your big fish clients. These clients are essential to your success and your need to take the time to work through each of these steps carefully and correctly for the best success.

5 Killer Business Mistakes (part 2)

In the last post we covered the first two of the 5 biggest mistakes you can make in dealing with big fish clients.

Today we’ll cover the third and fourth ones:

1. Taking on More Than You Can Handle.





When you take on too much, your business can’t keep up and therefore you can easily lose control of everything and find yourself barely functioning. You want your business to be successful, no doubt, but you need to have a plan for how you will handle the growth. Your clients expect great customer service and highly quality products/services, they don’t know or care about your behind the scenes operations to get those things done.



Look for these signs that you are taking on more than you can handle:

- Clients’ needs aren’t being met.

- Employee morale is low, clients are upset and you’re in a panic.

- You have to react in emergency mode to save accounts.

- Your current clients are suffering from trying to keep up with new business.

- Profits are going down.

- You are just trying to pick up the pieces of your business.

- Your clients/customers leave.

- Resources are being reallocated.

There a trick called the Mock Fish Plan. This plan can help you react positively when you are facing some or all of these things and help you get your business back on track. This plan will:



- Help increase sales in a short period of time.

- Alter your products/services for the better.

- Fulfill promises you made to your clients.

There are six steps to this plan:



- Bring in your best team and have them all help to meet the fish needs.

- Review your operational system.

- Anticipate future problems better.

- Communicate better.

- Include costs in your quotes.

- Always have a back-up plan.

2. All Your Eggs in One Basket



You can allow your company to become dependent on any one fish. Eventually or for certain periods there is going to be a slowing down period with your fish. In order to stay in the game you need to diversify.



If you’ve ever mishandled a fish, you could drive away potential fish as well. In order to keep balance and prepare for a strong future, there are a few things you can do.



- These things include:

- Stay in the loop and try to know what’s going on inside your fish company.

- Constantly reinvent yourself and stay at the top of your industry.

- Stay exclusive.

- Try to secure multi-year commitments and contracts.

- Spread your contracts out.

- Price your products/services correctly.

You also need to work to reduce your dependency on your fish. This can generally be measures in sales or profits. Take a look back at the process we’ve used thus far to snag more fish to keep this all in balance.

There are 5 big business mistakes you can make that will kill a deal and possibly even do in your business.





When you learn what top business mistakes are you are better able to avoid them and prevent them from happening in your business.  The top five business mistakes that we see are:



- Not meeting the client’s expectations

- Mishandling a client crisis

- Taking on more than you can handle

- Putting all your eggs in one basket

BIG Business Mistake #1: Not Meeting Client’s Expectations



It’s essential you give your client’s exactly what you promised during the negotiation portion of your relationship. If an event does happen where there is no way to meet the


client’s expectations, not only do you have to find a way to fix the situation, but you also have to find out where it all went wrong.



A couple of things could have contributed to this problem:



- Bad salesmanship. This could mean the salesperson was trying too hard to seal


the deal and didn’t listen to the client’s needs.

- Lack of communication. This breakdown occurs between the salesperson and


your operations department.

In order to avoid these mistakes, you need to put a clear plan of action into place that all of your sales staff needs to follow:



- Think before you speak.

- Give yourself a break.

- Perfect your process.

- Pre-format over-deliverables.

- Stay hands-on throughout the entire process.

- Define success.

BIG Business Mistake #2: Mishandling a Client Crisis



Crisis’ will happen, but how you respond and fix them will define your company and interaction with your clients’. You need to respond quickly and effectively. This will help


you gain even more trust and confidence from your client.



Some simple tips can help you deal with any client crisis:



- Take responsibility and apologize no matter who is at fault.

- Act swiftly and effectively.

- Step in and take control of the situation.

- Never point fingers or place blame.

- Stay in constant communication with your client.

- Stay calm throughout the situation.

- Keep your eye on the ball.
