Are You Living in Fake Resilience™? What High-Achieving Women Need to Know

🎧 New episode of Visionary Womenpreneurs is LIVE — and this one stopped me in my tracks.

I sat down with Barb Varcl Smith — trauma recovery educator and creator of The Ascendance Method™ — and we talked about something I think every high-achieving woman needs to hear.

She calls it Fake Resilience™.

It’s what happens when achievement, productivity, and perfectionism become survival strategies. It looks like strength from the outside. It feels like exhaustion from the inside.

And here’s what she said that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about:

“Trauma is not what happened to us. It’s how we reacted to it.”

If you’ve ever wondered “If I’m doing so well, why do I still feel stuck?” — this episode is for you.

There’s a question I want you to sit with before you read another word.

Are your achievements energized by joy — or are you holding it all together on sheer willpower and calling that strength?

If you hesitated on that question, this post is for you.

On a recent episode of the Visionary Womenpreneurs Podcast, I sat down with Barb Varcl Smith — trauma recovery educator, therapist, speaker, and creator of The Ascendance Method™ — and she introduced me to a concept I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.

She calls it Fake Resilience™.

What Is Fake Resilience™?

Fake Resilience™ isn’t weakness. It’s actually a sign of how capable you are. It’s what happens when achievement, productivity, perfectionism, and caretaking become survival strategies rather than genuine wellbeing.

From the outside, it looks like strength. From the inside, it feels like exhaustion.

Barb describes it this way: high-achieving women who are running on fake resilience are often exhausted, anxious, overthinking, not sleeping soundly — and underneath the achievement, not really happy. Not really joyful. Because they’ve learned to numb their feelings to keep going.

“If we’re running on that fake resilience, we are exhausted, anxious, overthinking. We’re achieving maybe — but we are not happy, we are not joyful.”

— Barb Varcl Smith

The hardest part? Most women don’t realize they’re living in it until something cracks. Burnout. A health crisis. Relationships falling apart. The moment when holding it all together suddenly becomes impossible.

Trauma Is an Explanation, Not an Excuse

One of the most powerful reframes Barb offers is this: trauma is not an excuse. It’s an explanation.

And here’s what that means practically: the patterns holding you back — the perfectionism, the people-pleasing, the hyper-independence, the constant productivity — aren’t signs that you’re broken. They’re adaptations. Survival strategies developed earlier in life that are still running the show, long after they’ve outlived their purpose.

“Trauma is not what happened to us. It’s how we reacted to it.”

— Barb Varcl Smith

That distinction matters because it gives you agency. You’re not broken. You adapted. And if you adapted once, you can adapt again — this time consciously, this time toward the life and business you actually want.

The 5 Pillars of Self

At the core of The Ascendance Method™ are what Barb calls the 5 Pillars of Self — the foundational elements of who you are that can get thrown out of balance by survival patterns:

- Inner Strength
- Self-Love
- Wisdom
- Intuition
- Purpose

When these pillars are in balance, you have access to your full self — your energy, your clarity, your capacity to lead. When they’re out of balance, you compensate. You push harder. You achieve more. And you wonder why it still doesn’t feel like enough.

The 4 Steps of Ascendance™

Moving out of survival mode and into authentic agency isn’t a quick fix. Barb’s framework walks people through four distinct steps:

- Recognition — Getting honest with yourself about what actually happened and how you responded. Not blame. Honest awareness.
- Release — Letting go of the stored patterns and emotions that have been running on autopilot.
- Regret and Grieving — Accepting the past choices you made from a survival place — and forgiving yourself for them.
- Rediscovery — Coming home to who you actually are, underneath the survival strategies. Embracing what you want and moving forward from that place.

One Healed Adult Can Change Generations

Perhaps the most powerful idea in our entire conversation is this one: healing yourself doesn’t just change your life. It changes the people around you. Your children. Your clients. Your community.

“If you change your action, the reaction has to change. That’s a universal law of physics.”

— Barb Varcl Smith

The ripple effect of one person’s healing is extraordinary. And for women entrepreneurs — women who already have outsized impact on the people around them — that ripple goes even further.

What This Means for Your Business

Here’s what I know after 20+ years of working with women entrepreneurs: you cannot build a thriving business from an empty well.

The Center of the Business Growth Compass — the YOU at the core of everything — isn’t a soft concept. It’s strategic. When you’re running on survival patterns, those patterns show up in your pricing, your marketing, your client relationships, your capacity to grow.

Sometimes what looks like a business problem is actually an alignment problem.

That’s why this conversation matters so much. Barb’s work and the Business Growth Compass framework are pointing at the same thing from different directions: when you understand yourself, when you lead from alignment rather than survival, everything in your business gets easier.

This is one of those conversations that stays with you. I highly recommend carving out 35 minutes and listening from start to finish.

Is Your Offer Missing Its WOW Factor?

Is Your Offer Missing Its WOW Factor?

How to Find It Without Building Anything New

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Table of contents

- How to Find It Without Building Anything New
- WHAT THE WOW FACTOR ACTUALLY IS
- THREE PLACES TO FIND YOUR FASTEST WOW UPGRADE
- TWO: The expertise that's already there but unpackaged.
- THREE: The moment of friction you've stopped noticing.
- YOUR ACTION THIS WEEK

Key Takeaways

- The WOW factor does not require building something new; it often involves refining what you already offer.
- You can enhance the WOW factor by improving follow-ups, naming your existing expertise, and eliminating unnoticed friction points.
- Personal follow-ups and tangible value increase client loyalty, leading to repeat business and referrals.
- Identify and enhance aspects of your service that create effortless experiences for clients.
- Focus on one specific upgrade to make your client experience undeniably better this week.

Here is a question worth sitting with this week:
- When a client finishes working with you -- what's the one thing they couldn't have expected going in?
- That unexpected thing. That moment of: I didn't anticipate this. This was more than I thought I was getting.

That's your WOW factor.

And here's what most entrepreneurs get wrong about it: they think the WOW factor requires building something new. A new offer. A new feature. A new program.

It almost never does.

WHAT THE WOW FACTOR ACTUALLY IS

In the Business Growth Compass framework, West is the innovation point. But innovation doesn't always mean invention. More often it means refinement -- making what you already have undeniably better.

The WOW factor is not a grand gesture. It's the thing that makes a client feel like she got more than she paid for. More than she expected. More than she would have gotten anywhere else.

- It's what turns a satisfied client into a loyal one.
- It's what generates referrals without you having to ask.
- It's what makes your pricing feel justified -- even to the people who almost didn't hire you.

And it's almost always already there in your business, invisible because you've stopped seeing it.

THREE PLACES TO FIND YOUR FASTEST WOW UPGRADE

ONE: The follow-up nobody else sends.

What happens after someone buys from you, books with you, or joins your program?

Many businesses do nothing. The transaction ends and the client is left to figure out what comes next on her own.

A personal note. A quick check-in email two weeks after they start. A resource you didn't promise but that you know would be useful right now. Any of these shift a client from satisfied to loyal. A personal note. A quick call.

And loyal clients do three things that drive your revenue: they come back, they refer, and they don't comparison shop.

This is the Profitability Key 7 -- Customer Engagements -- in action. How often are you staying connected with the people who already know and trust you?

TWO: The expertise that's already there but unpackaged.

You are probably delivering real value informally that you are not naming.

Something you do as a matter of course -- a framework you use in every session, an approach you take to problem-solving, a way you structure your client experience -- that a client didn't know they were getting when they hired you.

Name it. Package it. Let people know it's part of what they receive.

When you name the thing that was always there, it becomes visible. And visible value justifies your pricing and creates WOW moments where there used to be invisible effort.

THREE: The moment of friction you've stopped noticing.

Friction -- > Every service has a point where the client has to work harder than they should.

A form that's confusing. A process that takes longer than it needs to. A gap in communication that leaves them wondering what happens next. Something you've been aware of as a problem but haven't gotten around to fixing.

Find that point. Remove it. Correct it. Improve it. Share the solution.

Smooth is a WOW factor. Effortless is a WOW factor. The client who says "working with you is so easy" is a client who experienced a WOW -- she just can't name what it was.

YOUR ACTION THIS WEEK

Pick one. Just one of these three upgrades.

Not a new offer. Not a new program. One specific thing you could improve in the next seven days that would make the experience of working with you undeniably better.

The follow-up nobody sends.

The expertise that's already there but unpackaged.

The moment of friction you've stopped noticing.

That's West compass point work. Innovation as refinement. Making what you have stronger, clearer, and more WOW than it was before.
